Catalan Parliament debates about Transnational companies and Human Rights
The conference was organized with the aim of reflecting and starting to take action in the defense of the human rights violations committed by transnational companies.
Even though the majority of the world’s governments take part in the International Human Rights System, states tend to keep their responsibilities inside the own national territory, leaving the international protection of human rights in a legal vacuum.
This regulatory gap also affects the Transnational companies for which it is essential to continue with the actions of research, documentation and monitoring. The task carried out during the last two decades by international organisms, research centers, NGOs and social movements proves how urgent it is to have a binding regulatory framework to control the activities of these companies.
This is, precisely, the main objective of the process initiated in 2014 at the United Nations Human Rights Council. In Catalunya, both the government and the Parliament, in response to civil society mobilization and pressure, have expressed their will to put an end to any human rights violations committed by Catalan actors beyond the national borders.
